The Legislative Council Library covers 860 square metres with a collection of around 50,000 books and 40,000 sets of council records. It mainly serves Legislative Council Members, their staff and Secretariat staff, while also welcoming the public to visit and conduct research. As part of a recent renovation of the Legislative Council Complex, the library space has been completely refreshed and enhanced with an RFID smart library solution to upgrade the overall user experience.
Pain Points and Challenges
The library occupies a large area and holds as many as fifty thousand items, so all book registration and RFID tagging had to be completed within a tight timeframe. The collection also includes many valuable and rare titles that required extra‑careful handling. To further enhance the user journey, the client wanted visitors to be able to use robots for guided exhibition tours and in‑library book finding, but the sheer size of the space posed a challenge for accurate navigation and location guidance.
Solution
Million Tech delivered an end‑to‑end smart library solution including RFID management, smart book‑finding and robotic tour‑guides. We designed a library assistant robot that serves as both an aide and docent: the client can freely define exhibition zones, and the robot can display all exhibits in the library for users to choose. After a user selects an exhibit, the robot leads them to the display area and starts an introduction, allowing every visitor to gain a full understanding of each item. Users can also rely on the robot to locate specific books; by entering keywords of the title, the robot immediately guides them to the correct bookshelf so they can quickly find what they need.
For collection management, our team provided one‑stop on‑site tagging and data registration services so the library could start using RFID technology within a short period of time. We adopted the professional Easy Tag service to ensure that every RFID label achieves 100% readability, completely eliminating dead spots and making collection management more accurate and reliable.
Result
After the full upgrade, the Legislative Council Library now offers a brand‑new experience for Members, their staff, Secretariat staff and the general public. Operational efficiency in collection management has improved significantly, and the library looks forward to serving even more citizens in future, helping them better understand Hong Kong’s legislature and the city itself.
